Russian President Vladimir Putin has officialy declared the 22nd Winter Olympic Games open at the Olympic stadium "Fisht" in Sochi in front of some 40,000 viewers.
Montenegrin President, Filip Vujanovic, was present at the opening ceremony.
The show started with a performance about Russia, after which both russian President Vladimir Putin and IOC's President Thomas Bach held speeches.
"Welcome to the Winter olympic games in Sochi. Our city is unique, as it is the case with all of Russia. We are proud to have the privilege to host it for the whole world", said Dmitrij Cernisenko who is a president of organizational board in Sochi.
"Tonight we are all writting a new page in Olympic history. What took decades in other parts of the world has been achieved here in just seven years. That is a remarkable achievement.", as was pointed out by IOC's President, Thomas Bach.
The torch was brought into the arena by tennis star Maria Sharapova and passed on to Yelena Isinbayeva. It was then carried by Aleksandr Karelin, followed by Alina Kabayeva.
The Olympic flame was finally lit by Irina Rodnina and Vladislav Tretyak, which marked the official start of the 22nd Winter Olympic games.
These Games will gather 3,000 athletes, from 88 countries, including two montenegrin athletes in alpine skiing, Tarik Hadzic and Ivana Bulatovic. Their performance is planned for February 18, 19, 21 and 22.
Alongside Hadzic and Bulatovic, our national delegation also includes the director of national alpine team Rajko Kosic, coach Marina Kosic, doctor Predrag Dabovic and Head of Mission Predrag Marsenic.
