Ten days lefto to EYOF
In ten days Belgrade will host EYOF, European Youth Olympic Festival. This is the first Olympic competition in which 23 athletes from Montenegro will compete.
On last Friday Olympic flame has arrived from Athens to Belgrade, and it will buren until 21. July in front of the City Parliament until 28. July when it will be moved to "Beogradska Arena", until the end of the event.
O this biggest European sport event organised under the patronage of the EOC, ten judists from montenegro, five athletes, two tennis players, two swimmers and four table tennis players aged 14 and 17 are going to participate.
Serbian athlete Ivana Spanović is starting the flame with Olympic torch, which arrived in Belgrade for EYOF, hosted by Serbia from 21. to 28. July. Torch is in Serbian capital for the forth time in the history of the Olympic Movement.
The first European Youth Olympic Festival (EYOF) was held in 1991 under the name of the European Youth Olympic Days. The idea was launched by Jacques Rogge, at the time the President of the European Olympic Committees (EOC), and today's President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
Rogge's idea was supported by the EOC, and in 1991 Brussels was the first to host the potential Olympians in summer sports (athletics, gymnastics, basketball, volleyball, swimming, table tennis, football, hockey, judo). Two years later, apart from the summer EYOF for the first time, winter EYOF was organised.
Both summer and winter edition od EYOF is being held every second (uneven) year.
The EYOF reflects a long existing idea about the need for European athletes to have their own multi-sport competition similar to those held on other continents (Asian Games, African Games, Pan-American Games). Having in mind the fact that klimate in "old continent" wasn't in conformity with continental and international competition calendar, the idea of the "European Olympiad" for the best athletes was abandoned, and instead of it EYOF was launched.
442 athletes in total (249 men, 193 women) have participated both in EYOF nad the Olympic Games.
The Montenegrin Olympic Committee will provide full equipment for youth Montenegrin athletes.
