MONTENEGRIN KARATE PLAYERS CONTINUE WITH SUCCESS ON 16TH MEDITERRANEAN GAMES
Silver for Almir
Almir Cecunjanin, our karate national team member, in category up to 84 kg, won silver medal on Mediterranena Games in Pescara and in that way completed his rich collection of medals and trophies won on international tournaments.
In first round Cecunjanin had difficult fight with Ibrahim Geri from France, guy who has impressive score in the past. But, experience of Montenegrin competitor was crucial since he managed to preserve minimal difference in points 1:0 by the end of the match. His next opponent was Hamza Enalan from Algeria. This was also difficult and uncertain match in whic Cecunjanin was slightly better and managed to win 5:4. In the third match Italian Stefan Moniskali who was one of the favourites of this match, waited for him. In that match, which was also entry to final, competitior from karate club Budućnosti from podgorica was better and won 2:0.
In the match for gold medal, he met Spanish Javijer Martinez. It was encounter of two top fighters, so in regular time it was 0:0. Draw was also later after extensions, and than judges by voting made the decision that golden medal should go to Spanish competitor. This decision was subject to disapproval of the present audence and representatives of other national teams.
– I am very pleased with silver medal, because I confirmed success from last Mediterranean Games – said Almir Cecunjanin for ARENA. – I was really close to gold medal, but judges votes as they did. In any case, sivel is also big success because it is important to know that most quality karate is concentrated in Mediterranean countries, France, Italy and Spain. I think that this medal is good signal for management of Karate federation of Montenegro to pay more attention to national team members in this sport
Our other representative in this sport, Jasmin Hot had to go to the audience only after the first round. He was defeated in the match against French Jean Tomatino, and finished participation in Mediterranean Games.
