Peace and Sport International Forum 2019

President of the Montenegrin Olympic Committee Dusan Simonovic attended the Peace and Sport International Forum which was held in Monaco from 11 – 13 December 2019, in which the President has been participating since 2009. Over this period, the number of activities initiated by this movement has been steadily growing and generating great success through extraordinary events and programs around the world.

The forum, sponsored by Prince Albert II of Monaco, has traditionally brought together hundreds of participants from different social fields, including heads of state, strategic leaders from the business and sports world, Nobel Peace Prize winners, representatives of civil society and international organizations, athletes and activists. The main aim of this Forum is fostering the spirit of dialogue and cooperation necessary to preserve world peace through sport.

The main theme of this gathering was “Investing in peace, acting through sport”, and delegates and well-known speakers from more than 90 countries discussed various opportunities to increase investment in long-term projects that will contribute to the community and leave a lasting legacy for generations to come.

Within the three-day program there was another celebration, a 10th anniversary the Champions for Peace club, which is bringing together over a hundred top athletes dedicated to the mission of maintaining peace through sport as one of the founding pillars of this movement.

Among the well-known names is Didier Drogba, a legendary footballer and a recognized peace and humanitarian activist. Drogba is the Vice President of this organization, and he talked with President Simonovic about supporting the project “6 April – International Day of Sport for Development and Peace” in Montenegro.

At the gala dinner on 12 December, the Peace and Sport awards were presented to the most successful organizations, individuals and projects. The Olympic Committee of Bosnia and Herzegovina recieved an awar in the category “Diplomatic Activity of the Year” for its organization of the 14th Winter European Youth Festival EYOF 2019, which united the city of Sarajevo and East Sarajevo and re-ignited the Olympic flame in this neighboring country.

The “Champion of the Year” award was given to the South African rugby player Siya Kolisi for his dedication to education and social cohesion.
