GSSE "Montenegro 2019" officially closed

Montenegrin sport festival is over – the Games of the Small States of Europe 2019 have been completed, and Montenegro and the Montenegrin Olympic Committee have shown, above all, a great heart and hospitality, along with knowledge and capacity to organize a high-level sport competition.

For the first time our country hosted a multi-sport event in which 835 athletes completed, in ten disciplines and in five cities. All aspects of the organization functioned in accordance with the highest standards.

However, this could not have been possible without the energy, enthusiasm and a bit of Mediterranean charm.

“You showed to the world how big Olympic spirit is im your beautiful country”, said Thomas Bach, President of the International Olympic Committee, who spent two days in Montenegro and was a special guest at the GSSE Closing Ceremony.

President of the Montenegrin Olympic Committee Dusan Simonovic spoke with immense pride.

“Tonight we extinguish the Olympic flame, but a warmth and glamour will remain in our hearts and will continue to be our inspiration and the memory of the path we crossed since June 2015 when the organization of the Games has been awarded to us, until today, with five unforgettable days behind us. The days in which we – small, but so big – united in diversity, celebrated sport and the Olympic spirit”, said Simonovic.

At the end of the ceremony, Simonovic symbolically handed over the flag of the Games to Jaume Marti of Andorra, a state in the Pyrenees, which will hold the 19th edition of the competition that brings together athletes from European countries with less than a million inhabitants.

“For the past five days, you were not just athletes. You were architects and builders, who extended bridge of trust and friendship to the Adriatic coast. We can be proud, knowing that we, with the help of our friends, sponsors and volunteers, have given away all our energy to be exemplary hosts. Now, it is time to hand over the steering wheel to Andorra”, said Simonovic.

Finally, after spectacular fireworks lit the skies above Budva, a party began at the Olympic park – goodbye from Budva, see you in Andorra in 2021.
