The President of Montenegrin Olympic Committee, Dusan Simonovic and Chef de Mission for the Olympic Games in London, Igor Vusurovic and their associates held a meeting today with representatives of the Montenegrin media. Media representatives are familiar with current preparations for the performance of Montenegrin athletes at the Olympic Games.
So far, 32 Montenegrin athletes has provided place at the Olympic Games and will compete in six sports, two team and four individual. Montenegrin delegation in the Olympic Village, at the moment has 54 members.
In London Montenegro will be represented by water polo and handball teams, athletics by Daniel Furtula and Slađana Perunović, judo Srdjan Mrvaljević, shooter Nikola Šaranović and boxer Bosko Draskovic, who received today special invitation, so called wild card.
It is expected that swimmer Milica Markovic will receive invitation for participation, and athlete Marija Vukovic, sailor Milivoj Dukić and tennis player Danka Kovinić will also have opportunity to compete in London.
"We are extremely pleased with the large number of delegation members. We have no sports that have no chance at the Games, we have national teams that can make a great result. We should not burden them with medals and final placement, for us qualification for the Olympic Games is fantastic success, " said President Simonovic at a briefing with reporters.
He pointed out that for Montenegro and the Montenegrin Olympic Committee, placement and the results in qualifications are great victory and an excellent result before the Olympic Games. President Simonovic, recalled events organized to promote the Olympism and announced a competition in graffiti in several municipalities in Montenegro and the Olympic caravan, whose main goal is to promote Montenegrin athletes participants of the Olympic Games.
President of MOC announced that the departure of athletes will be organized as well as promotion of equipment in which our athletes will perform in London. "Our ambition is that all our athletes participate at the Opening Ceremony. I believe this is one of the obligations. Since we already have numerous and beautiful team, why not show it? He stressed that all obligations with preparations for participation in the Olympic Games must be completed by 22 July, when the first delegation of MOC will travel to London, while the athletes will join three days later.
Montenegrin Chef de Mission Igor Vusurovic said that Montenegro must be proud of its athletes. "They are not athletes who came for wild cards, but their results and will brought them here. We have athletes at the Olympic Games who can valorize their dreams," said Vušurović. He pointed out that for 13 August was planned joint return of most of the sports delegationfrom London, announcing welcome reception.
At the Olympic Games in London will be also present President Filip Vujanovic, Prime Minister Igor Luksic and Minister of Education and Sports Slavoljub Stijepović. It was announced that Vujanovic be present at the reception hosted by the Queen of England.
At a meeting with the media was told that it is not yet decided who will carry the Montenegrin flag during the Opening Ceremony, but the attitude is that the honor to carry the flag gets athlete with the best result. "It will be decided before the Games. Main criterion is that athlete who has the best result carries the flag at the opening. It doesn’t have to be same athlete to carry it at the Closing Ceremony, yet criteria remain the same. Whoever achieves best result or captain of a team with best result will carry the flag,"said Simonovic.
