8th World Conference on Sport, Education and Culture took place in Amsterdam
8th World Conference on Sport, Education and Culture, which was attended by over 500 representatives from 110 countries, was held in Amsterdam (Netherlands) from November 24th to November 27th, 2012. The conference was attended by the President of the Montenegrin Olympic Committee, Dusan Simonovic.
This important event was organized by the International Olympic Committee in cooperation with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) and the National Olympic Committee of the Netherlands. The focus of the Conference was on the implementing of the strategy, practice and potential of the sport and Olympism in the cultural and educational programs.
Representatives of the sporting community, the United Nations system, civil society organisations, academia, governments, non-governmental organisations, the corporate sector and the media were able to participate and share their experiences in interactive plenary sessions and roundtable discussions designed to foster constructive debate.
In line with the motto of the Conference "Olympism powerd by Youth", the debate featured numerous young speakers and Olympians, who presented their ideas and activities, all aimed at strengthening the impact of the young people in different areas.
Participants of the 8th World Conference on Sport, Culture and Education unanimously approved a final declaration, which contains a set of recommendations that refer to a range of topics including the important role of the athletes’ entourage, next year’s fifth UNESCO World Sport Ministers Conference (MINEPS V), social media and educational programmes for athletes.
By action points contained in the Declaration, the participants called on all relevant institutions to contribute in the implementation of the action plan:
– to include values-based education and physical education in school curricula
– to use, according to the IOC's strategy, all available media to send messages to young people about the sport, the Olympic values, education and healthy lifestyles;
– to support the introduction and enhancement of educational programs for athletes which equip them with employability skills necessary for their post-high performance careers and
– to work with public authorities on the protection of the athletes.
